When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?

Summary
It was an unfortunate trait of Viktor’s to overfocus on a nagging problem until he solved it.
This made him an excellent scientist but overly distant at some times and too hyper-aware at others. It had been easier as a child — not any less hurtful, more actually — when not many people had wanted to associate with him.
Yet now, there was Jayce whom he cared about a great deal. He did not want to ruin anything about their burgeoning friendship and partnership by poking and prodding him.
He would hate it if Jayce was to do the same to him.
Early in their partnership, Viktor takes Jayce to a spa.
