Shiv bites her lip as she remains under her mother’s microscopic gaze, automatically attempting to rearrange her blazer in front of her. Had it looked a bit tight? It certainly feels too small now.
“Christ.”
And just like that, the room goes cold. A cloud covers the sun. It’s darker, quieter. Save for two women breathing deeply. A clock ticks, a door slams below. Caroline doesn’t stop staring, Shiv wishes she would. She can’t breathe.

And when she’d asked the second time, followed by a third, Tom had wondered how far down she'd fallen into her spiral of disbelief, if telling her the story over and over would pull her back out or push her further away from acceptance.
