It’s partly to silence his own thoughts, and partly to explain his shell-shocked reaction that Dean says, “I didn’t even think that angels could feel stuff like that.”
Cas’s face goes blank. Neither Dean nor Cas say anything or look at the other for a long moment.
“To be fair, I don’t think angels are supposed to,” Cas finally says, voice rougher than it had been, and somehow distant. “Even as a human, I’ve never had a soul.” There’s a glassy look in Cas’ eye as he stares past a spot on the wall, and his voice dips quiet. “What should it feel like? To be in love?”

Dean didn't think that angels could feel love. He's very wrong about that. But he's also determined to make up for his mistake.

His face had been changed by thirty-something years of slicing and dicing, aging out of those delicate features. If he dropped dead now on the bathroom floor, the coroner wouldn’t call him pretty. But his hair stayed Ken-Doll-identical all the way through.
