Now in the privacy of their home, Niko shivers and shakes from the cold seeping into her bones, the adrenaline from tonight finally wearing off. Crystal hugs her tighter, planting a kiss on the side of her head.
“I don’t know about you boys,” Crystal sighs into Niko’s wet hair, “but we’re going to take a hot shower and order a pizza.”
Charles blows out a low whistle in response, then groans with frustration. “I would kill for a shower and a pizza right now. Any chance you would–”
“No.”
“You don’t even know what I was going to ask!”
“You’re predictable, Charles, especially when you’re thinking with your dick.”
The Dead Boy Detective Agency has solved another case! At what cost when they're covered in ghost plasma, it's pouring rain, and it's the dead of night. Arguments arise, Charles is a flirt with his partners, and it would be nice if the four of them could just lay in bed and watch Scooby Doo for the rest of the night. Is that too much to ask?

Summary
“Oh, Sweetheart, what happened?” Edwin says softly, running one of his thumbs around the tense part of his neck. It makes Charles’s eyes well up with tears a bit.
He blinks back the water in his eyes and takes a huge breath before sharing the worst part of his injury. The words “iron choker” are lost on his tongue. It makes him look like a blubbering mess as he angrily huffs nothing in Edwin’s direction.
His partner turns away from Charles, “you two said he was perfectly fine in the other room.”
“He was fine,” Crystal barks back. “How was I supposed to know he was going to hurt himself?”
“It’s Charles, he always hurts himself!”

Summary
After a minute of walking in silence, Edwin is bothered. He pulls his gloved hand away from Charles and crosses his arms around his chest in frustration. “Are you going to talk to me or are we going to keep walking?”
“I think you should sit this case out.”
“I beg your pardon?”
Or this case leads the Dead Boy Detectives into a labyrinth and Charles advises Edwin to sit it out (he doesn't listen).

“Edwin?” Charles whispers, slowing down his steps when approaching his mate. “Edwin, is that you?”
The person’s breath hitches upon hearing Edwin’s name. Charles stops walking, waiting for a sign from this person to be Edwin and not someone else who’s landed themselves in the Dollhouse. He watches the person at the end of the hall lift up their head from their lap, staring helplessly at Charles with lines of dried blood down the right side of their face. To Charles’s surprise, this person looks like Edwin, but with longer hair and rounder features, and it hits him. It hits him like a slap to the face and tears immediately fill at the corners of his eyes.

“I wasn’t always confident in my name when I started at St. Hilarion.” Edwin starts, earning a small glance from Charles. “I ran away from home, started a new life, and presented myself as Edwin Payne. It took a couple months for me to get used to saying it out loud.”
His eyes narrowed at Edwin, studying him in a new way that left Edwin feeling very unnerving. “What? Your name was Edward and you changed it so your family couldn’t track you down at a measly boarding school?” Charles’s question has bite, but it’s nothing Edwin can’t handle. He’s getting defensive, a common charade Edwin used during his time at school and knows all too well.
“We are the same, Charles.”

“What’s Keith’s type?” Lance blurted out like an idiot.
“It’s… obvious,” Pidge said. “He gets all flustered over shitty puns and most physical comedy. And have you seen the way he stares at Hunk when he’s going on about the mechanics of something? Like how the lions work? I’ve literally seen him blushing when Hunk goes into explanation mode.”
“So, you think he has a crush on Hunk?” Lance squawked.
“No. You bonehead,” Pidge laughed. “I’m saying any dad-joke-telling, klutzoid with good grades has probably got a pretty good shot at Keith.”Or: It figures that after years of getting it hilariously wrong face-to-face, Lance finally gets good at talking to Keith through a screen, which is, like, one of his biggest accomplishments. Then, Pidge makes the comment that Keith has a type, while heavily implying that it's Matt.
But, listen, with everything going on with Voltron, the coalition, the Blade of Marmora, and Coran, Lance isn't going to get distracted worrying about it.

Summary
This fic is inspired by "Voice of an Angel" by irlcatheravery. They came up with the premise, and I recommend reading it for a different take on the concept!
An alternate ending of episode 8 where the iron choker Esther traps Charles with gives him serious burns on his neck that leave him not able to speak for the time being. Not knowing if it's permanent, Charles gets frustrated, but Edwin is supportive as they both recover from the Esther fight.
