The heat of Rafayel’s body presses in on her. The edge of his dagger’s poised like a wire across her throat. It isn’t exactly how she’d choose to start her first real conversation with her former subordinate-cum-roommate-cum-lover-cum-sexually-charged-nemesis-cum-hostage, but she’s left with no other choice but to make do.
She pushes the muzzle of her gun into his side, just to alert him that it’s there. His eyes go wide, darting down and back again at the pressure. Raising her hand and smiling in cheeky surrender, she says, “I can explain?”

The color’s cute, so you thought. It’s a perfectly presentable teal. You even went out of your way to get a harness with matching accents and frankly, you thought Rafayel would appreciate your attention to detail. Instead, he looks almost offended by the aesthetic, asking a bit desperately: “Do you have anything else?”
After a brief pause, you offer, “I have a red one back at my apartment—”
Rafayel’s expression promptly curdles. “Eugh.”
Rafayel has strong opinions about the color of your strap.

Summary
Gideon struggles to accept his dead best friend isn’t actually dead.
"We're taking him downtown?" a deputy sitting in the passenger seat asks.
"Yeah. He's got no one to call," Hart replies.
"Wait, wait, wait. I have someone," Gideon says.
Hart grabs his phone and looks at Gideon. "Alright, give me the number."
Gideon quickly recites a number he knows will go straight to a pre-recorded message.
However, the phone actually rings. And rings. And rings.
"It's me," a haggard voice says as a greeting. "What is it?"
