Summary
Jean doesn't know a lot about love, not really.
She's never had a lot of people to learn from.
Sara was the only person who ever really loved her, and Jean thinks that loving someone means staying because Sara did. Sara loved her, and Sara stayed. So Jean stays for Peter.
She learns a lot from loving Peter. She learns that falling in love happens somewhere between burning the toast and arguing about laundry and brushing past each other in the kitchen, and all without you realizing it. She learns that she's capable of loving someone other than Sara. She learns that love isn't always wonderful - sometimes love is terrible because sometimes you fall in love with someone whose heart already belongs to another. And it breaks your heart.
Jean learned from Sara that loving someone means staying.
Jean learns from Peter that loving someone means staying even when it breaks your heart.
So Jean stays for Peter, even though it breaks her heart, because she loves him.
(As it turns out, he loves her too. It just takes him a while to realize it.)
Or
Jean gets off the bus. She stays with Peter, falls in love, gets her heart broken, then gets that fairytale ending after all.
