"You're going to ruin me," he texted her at 4:03AM on a Saturday evening. Rhaenyra could swear she heard the desperate cadence of his voice echo around the dark confines of her room. She stared at the New York skyline for what felt like an eternity, fingers resting on her thighs. She dug her nails in, ever so lightly. Attempted to ground herself.
The silence stretched on. Not uncomfortably. Fingers trembling, she took a short breath in.
"Good," she texted back. Tossed her phone halfway across the room, it landed softly on the carpet. Her cheeks heated. A phrase she learned in Latin earlier that week resurfaced in her mind:
"Medio tutissimus ibis - you will go most safely in the middle."
Neither of them had ever been good at safe. Or finding a middle ground.

The silence that followed in the seconds after was somehow worse than the blackout. Darcy did not blink.
Then, finally: “Though that sounds lovely,” a pause, “Unfortunately, I don’t have any fuel for it.”
Elizabeth fell back against the couch in a theatrical groan. “Useless. You’re absolutely useless.” The wine made everything funnier. And hazier. And heavier. She closed her eyes and muttered, “Actually…”
