    “You’re smirking. Is something funny?”

Wayne does often say Eddie’ll make a terrible poker player. No mystique, he’s often said, which made Eddie quietly stress for weeks afterwards that he’s accidentally been giving away the twists in his campaign with unconcealed facial expressions. Beleaguered, he has no choice but to be fully and completely honest with Steve, which, he’s found in their lengthening interactions lately, Steve does not like.

“I thought it was funny how you very carefully calculated how long of a stride you’d need to take to avoid that puddle.” Eddie answers, and Steve’s brows predictably furrow, the way they always do when he regards Eddie.

“He’s dressed like Steve.” Dustin says plainly, monotone in that way he gets when he’s genuinely upset and not just worked up for show.

“Why?” Mike is asking because he still hasn’t processed the ugly fact of the matter, reasonably so considering how bizarre it is to witness someone be so braindead in public, but Lucas would like an answer that addresses the other type of why. Like, why is Conner Marrigan such a fucking asshole?

“Clearly, uh, Marrigan wanted to have a costume no one else would think of.” Eddie chimes in. For once he sounds almost nervous, though Lucas has no idea why. “I figured I’d let you know, considering your allegiance to Harrington and also the general fact that it’s a pretty fucked up thing to do.”

The third day in a row he sees expletives graffitied over an image of his own face—the post office bulletin board, this time, and there’s another errand Uncle Wayne won’t want him running anymore—Eddie waltzes into the Family Video and sprawls his whole torso across the counter. “I’ve decided I’m gonna live to a hundred,” he proclaims.

“Why?” Robin asks, at the same time Steve says “How?” and Eddie grins, showing all his teeth. He’s taken to checking his brakes haven’t been cut every time he starts the van.

“Pure spite, baby. They wanna kill me, they’ve gotta get through me first.”
