He can't tell if she's talking to him or to the whole table. She has that way of speaking, broad, inclusive, a leader addressing the room. He waits, hoping someone else will jump in, just to buy his heart a second to slow down.
"Oh, you know exactly what he's talking about," Rossi says, waving a hand like he's shooing a fly.
"Come on, let's not put Aaron on the spot again," JJ chimes in, her voice gentle.
"Oh, right. That." Emily's sigh is perfectly casual. She sets her glass down. "Really, Aaron, don't sweat it. People say all kinds of things when they're drunk."

Hotch watches her take the stage in a pantsuit.
He tells himself the pinching in his chest is irrational.
Under the crisp white linen of the tablecloth, Beth's fingers find his and link them. He turns to meet her questioning look and is met with a smile tugging at the corner of her lip. He swallows hard, a dry click in his throat, and forces his attention back to the front, to the wineglass held with unnerving steadiness in Emily's hand.
"Good evening, everyone, good evening." Her voice is this nauseating amplified purr. "One minute of your attention, thank you."
