Claire Beauchamp has just finished nursing school; Jamie Fraser has wanted to stretch his legs outside of his childhood home for quite some time. They both board the same plane heading to Samoa to help with the creation of a new community hospital and to rebuild the village after a tsunami has devastated the area. They sit next to each other on the plane, along with a mischievous boy named Claudel, but things take a turn for the worse (or perhaps for the better) as their plane crashes into the Pacific.

Summary
Claire is precariously close to the edge. She loves her job but everyone thinks it's causing her stress. She would love a holiday but can't quite work out how to book the time off. She loves her husband but he wants a divorce.
It's all starting to be a bit much.
In a daze, Claire boards a train to a place called Broch Mordha, where a chance encounter leads her to Jamie Fraser, the new owner of the dilapidated 'Dragonfly In Amber' Inn. Claire needs a place to stay whilst she attempts to put her life back together and Jamie needs a paying guest to help cover the cost of fixing the roof. Realising that they need the other to get through the next four weeks, it soon becomes obvious to everyone in the small Highland town that Claire and Jamie were meant for each other.
