Her throat works. “Am I not allowed to do that?”
She doesn’t mean to sound defensive, but the words come out like that anyway. Mike blinks, a little surprised and she can’t blame him for it, but the gentleness of his voice doesn’t fade. “Of course you are,” he says with a nod. Never one to deny her anything.
It sends an aching pang through her chest. He’s always on her side, puts her above everyone else—including himself. He has shown it to her time and time again, proved to her repeatedly that nothing is more important to him than she is. And that—that worries her.

The question of how vampires came to be is one that is answered by scientific hypotheses and religious doctrine alike.
Those in the former category often cite evolution, stating that vampires fill the specific niche on the food chain designed to counter the dangerous overpopulation of the most dominant species on the planet: humans.
Those in the latter category believe vampires exist as a holy punishment – either for the humans or the vampires, depending on which side of Catholicism they fall on – and subscribe to either the divine right to rule, the necessity of repentance, or both.
But regardless of what any vampire believes about their origin or reason for being, they all leave bodies in their wake. And even for those at the very top of the food chain, that sort of blood trail is bound to attract attention.
