The book that Waverly was attempting to read didn’t make any sense. She was sure that she was reading the words as they were meant to be read, but none of them were processing into complete thoughts. This one paragraph had been read six times now. While the words mentioned ancient texts and forgotten languages, all she could see in her mind’s eye was Nicole.
She allowed her eyes to close as the vivid images of her girlfriend flashed in short sequences. Nicole’s abdomen tightening as Waverly brought her to her climax. The look in those brown eyes when they had darkened from want as she pressed open-mouthed kisses all over Waverly’s heated body. How low Nicole’s voice could get when she was whispering the most filthy things against her lips.

Summary
“Life’s a game and every move is wrong.” Her daddy once said while picking up poker chips from the coffee table, half drunk and thoroughly aggravated at losing every hand that night to the other boys from the police station. Waverly knew he mumbled it, but still heard it loud and clear all the same from the kitchen doorway. The words were foreign to her then, but stuck in her mind with all the other memories, and she wished that night to understand what those words meant.

Summary
The warmth of that night lasts them into the next morning, and through the day; and that night when Waverly sleeps, the bad dreams stay away.
But then another cold morning dawns, and brings with it again that frozen unforgiving grief. Nicole comes back from the kitchen bearing two coffees, but when she sees Waverly's sad and distant stare, she sighs, puts the steaming mugs down to be forgotten, and gets back into bed.
“What can I do?”
Waverly shrugs.
“Kiss me?”

In the aftermath of 3x02 and 3x03, Waverly and Nicole take what comfort they can from each other. And have a long overdue conversation.

Summary
What if Waverly couldn't see past all the pain and emotions clouding her thoughts as Jolene continued to tear her down? What if the reminder of Wynonna, Nicole, and the rest of the team wasn't enough for Waverly to throw away the knife and confront her demons? What if Waverly listened to the thoughts inside her head and heart?
Sometimes the idea of "what if" controls our thoughts so much to where we write our own story to fulfill those scenarios. An alternative ending to Wynonna Earp 3x05 "Jolene."
