    Summary

Samira’s bones ached with the kind of exhaustion that went beyond muscle and marrow — it was the kind that lived behind the eyes, that pressed into the soul. The fluorescent lights of the hospital still lingered in her vision even after the elevator ride, even after the walk home through the chilled Pittsburgh night. Her fingers were still trembling faintly from the endless charting, the alarms, the sterile smell of antiseptic that clung to her like a second skin.
She had always thought she could handle everything on her own. That had been the rule she built her life around — never rely, never need, never ask. It had gotten her through med school, through New York, through four months of days that bled into nights and nights that ended in cold cafeteria coffee. But it had also hollowed her out.
    And then there was Jack.

    Day 1: First Times

    First 'I love you's.

His eyes are heavy-lidded, mouth still slick from their kiss when he says, "God, I love you."

    The bubble bursts.

    “What?” she breathes.

Nice, pretty, well-adjusted girls—girls who are ready for a relationship—don’t sprint out of the room when someone says I love you. They smile softly, kiss them back, maybe tear up a little (a cute, appropriate, romcom-acceptable amount), and say I love you, too. They certainly do not flee wearing nothing but said person’s boxers like some kind of emotionally stunted bandit that only hits in the morning hours.

Samira is decidedly not a nice, normal girl. She is a panicked, malfunctioning fire alarm of a human being whose brain short‑circuits at the mere suggestion of emotional vulnerability. A girl who hears I love you and responds with the fight‑or‑flight instincts of a cornered raccoon.

    Summary

When Samira wakes up the second time, there are fingers prodding at lips. She bites down on them in defiance and anger at having been woken up. She tries to tilt her head to the side, but a firm hand on her chin forces her in place. When her ears stop ringing, she hears Jack's painfully fond voice cooing at her, urging her to be a good girl and open up.

Samira gets sick, and Jack comes over to take care of her (in more ways than one).

    Summary

You smile because he remembered. It is a small thing, a normal thing. I remember too. I remember you hate lids with raised drinking tabs because they touch your upper lip. I remember you switch to decaf when your hands begin trembling, though you lie and blame the trauma bay temperature. I remember the first time I ran into you at the CCME conference in Vegas 6 years ago when I was on leave. I remember you had an intern's badge on, and you were so earnest as you tried to get the attention of the editor of the Harvard Medical Journal to discuss a piece about racial inequality. I remember going to the front desk and telling them that I needed to change the billing address on your hotel room, and could they be so kind as to remind me what address was on file? I remember going to bed that night and looking you up. I remember everything, Mira. The difference is he wants credit for it.
