Dan stares at their hands, inches apart on the edge of the hospital bed. What the fuck is wrong with us?, he thinks, but keeps his hand where it is anyway. “I promise I won’t nearly die ever again!”

With a bit of practice, he could easily detect the signs of attraction in Lestrade’s behaviour on seeing Mycroft at crime scenes. The way his gaze lingered on him for longer than average, how he laughed a bit louder than usual, or how his mood improved sustainably after exchanging a few words with him. Although Mycroft loved Christmas, he hated celebrating it with his family sometimes - especially with his brother ignoring him for no apparent reason. Mycroft was therefore glad for the ring of the doorbell. It offered him an opportunity to get away for a moment. He didn't expect the boy in front of the door to be Sherlock's babysitter bringing cookies, and he couldn't possibly know how attractive the neighbours have become since he'd gone to uni.
