Something in Xiao shifts, jumps, his chest tightening around itself at Aether’s honest words. Aether is always honest with Xiao– he doesn’t sugarcoat it, but he doesn’t hurt Xiao purposefully. He’s good to me, Xiao thinks, do I deserve this?
Is he allowed to want good things for himself? Is he allowed to have Aether be good to him like this, even if he deserves it? Even if he wants it so badly it manifests as a physical ache within himself?
Xiao is warm, skin hot to the touch. He wants to pull away from Aether, as gentle as he is– he wants to run and hide, to get himself away from this apartment and Liyue Harbour. Is he allowed to have the privilege to do that?

Xiao releases a breath Aether did not realize he was holding in. It sounds relieved, but when Xiao speaks, it is out of bewildered frustration. "I still fail to understand why they are making such an overture."
Aether laughs, swinging their hands once. "You still think there aren't people out there that want to spend time with you?"
"Not particularly," is Xiao's immediate and distressingly confident reply, and Aether's heart sinks. "But," Xiao quickly adds, averting his eyes, "it is something I would not mind trying."
