Summary
Eddie expects there to be no answer – last time Buck was suspended, he had to literally be dragged from the bed – and is surprised when he hears shuffling. Swinging the door open, Buck stands in shorts and workout gear and a thin sheen of sweat all over, his headphones stuck in his ears. “Uh, hi?” He asks, taking in the two, plucking his headphones out. “Sorry, did we have plans?”
“No!” Chris yells. “This is a surprise attack!”
Then he launches himself at Buck.
To Buck’s credit, he handles the preteen leaping for a hug as well as anyone could, not even taking a step back before wrapping his arms around him and lifting Chris in the air. Chris giggles as he does so, Buck even spinning once to make them louder.
And Eddie?
Eddie is undone. Eddie tells that box he has filled with Buck and feelings and thoughts to fucking shut because now is not the time to confess his love for his best friend.
*Or: All aboard the dispatcher!Eddie train, working through being on the wrong side of the phone, especially when there’s a particular firefighter who will just not use his head.

Christopher hums. “Okay.”
They move quickly and efficiently, like they’ve done this a thousand times before. And they have - they have, and the reality of that settles in Eddie’s bones like something heavy. The way Buck has so seamlessly fit into their lives, the way he’s carved a space for himself and now Eddie can’t even imagine a time before he was here. Doesn’t want to ever have to.

Buck’s voice is soft when he says the words into the darkness of the bedroom. He’s not even sure if Eddie’s still awake; it’s been a while since they said goodnight, after Buck managed to convince him that he didn’t actually have to crash on the couch. Not after today, not after everything.
But the bed shifts with movement, and then Eddie’s turning to face him. “Yeah.”
Buck swallows. His heart feels like lead in his chest, but that’s nothing new. “I’m glad you weren’t.”

Eddie thought for a long moment. Too long, maybe. Then he shrugged, “Honestly, Buck? I have no idea.”
Buck’s brows pinched up. “What do you mean? When have you felt the most loved?”
“Don’t make a big thing of this, Buck. Promise?”
Buck made a show of crossing his heart, brows still raised curiously.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever… really felt loved in a relationship? I’m not convinced that I know what makes me feel loved…”

After finding out that Eddie doesn't know what his love language is, Buck sets about finding out for him. He begins a five week experiment, one for each love language, to figure out which will make Eddie feel the most loved.
