He can’t just spring this on his husband, he needs to soft-launch it in a safe environment over the course of many months until eventually, he and Ilya arrive at the conclusion together—perfectly on the same page. Decisions like this needed to be made as a team, not individually.
Or, Shane decides he wants to start a family, but instead of talking to his husband like a normal person, he crafts an elaborate plan. The plan fails spectacularly.
