His entire family was gone. Murdered. And by his own hand no less. There wasn't much else to add other than the fact Itachi had lost the only home he had ever known. Even if that home had been covered in thorns and snakes.
So when the opportunity arose to either face death at the Naka river or by his brothers hand the choice was obvious.
Or: Itachi is extraordinarily good at death until it's his own. The Naka river is weird. And Luffy finds a strange kid out on sea that he promptly asks to join him. Because that’s obviously a pirates first reaction upon finding a stranger.
