A small, deranged part of his mind imagines seizing her hand, begging her to take him with her. But of course he does not. He just steps aside to let her pass; and then he stands there, frozen in the shadow of the terrible echoing pain they now share, watching as she crosses the hall and vanishes into the rooms he is no longer allowed to enter.
