The room stilled. The rustling papers, the moving of chairs, the quiet chatter — all of it was demolished the moment the officer had asked that question. Narumi’s face didn’t waver. With the rumours spreading, he was wondering when someone would have the balls to ask him, he just didn’t expect it to be some random dude he’s never seen before this moment.
“I know that you have to know the rumors going around,” he quips, refusing to drop the topic. “Let me ask again: Are you two dating or not?”

Narumi wasn't an idiot. He knew of the rumors going around the entirety of the JAKDF, and the very obvious glances and quick whispers that followed him and Hoshina. He just didn't expect it to be brought up so soon, and at the worst possible place.

Summary
Ranpo doesn’t expect anything special when Fukuzawa gives him a case to solve on behalf of the Police Department. What, at first, seemed like an easy case, takes a turn when the Police Department finds that where the suspect is living, as deduced by Ranpo, is not there at all. So Ranpo, unfortunately, is assigned to the case as a compromise for messing up. On his chase for the suspect, he feels surprised when he runs into a certain American author, who happens to be involved in the same case accidentally. An American author, who was indirectly the cause of Ranpo’s mistake.

The word about the Defense Force hosting an annual gala spread through the First Division’s corridors in excited cheers and quiet, hopeful expectations. It wasn’t exactly a gala — more like a three-day public exhibition showcasing Defense Force technology advancement in collaboration with "Izumo Tech" — but the final evening would culminate in a refined networking dinner. High-ranking officers, developers, political figures, and some of Japan's wealthiest investors would attend.
As the event took place only once every four years, the whole of Japan treated it almost like a national holiday. Which included elegant outfits, paparazzi, and gossip, of course.
