It happens on a random morning in May when Alex, age fourteen, pads into the kitchen to greet his mother and steal a waffle from June's plate and sees a man sitting at their breakfast counter, reading a newspaper, a cup of coffee raised to his lips. Like he belongs. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. June doesn't seem to give the man a second thought. She merely flicks Alex on the forehead and takes back the waffle. Ellen isn't worrying, either. In fact, she's talking to him. Asking what his schedule is like. Making plans for dinner.

Summary
The past few weeks have been nothing but stressful.
With Eddie training for his new job at dispatch, all the spring cleaning he has to do, and the past few days, Chris has been upset and grumpy for no discernible reason. And he’s done it mostly alone. Yes, Carla is there, but he doesn’t have his 118 support system like he used to and—
Listen. He knows it’s his fault on that. He understands that leaving the 118 didn’t mean leaving his family. But he also needs time to accept and process what’s going on. It’s a bit like when Buck was worried he’d never be a firefighter again and Eddie promised there was more to life (“says the firefighter,” Buck had said snarkily) but this time Eddie doesn’t have the possibility of going back to work that Buck had. He’s done. The job he loved has been ripped out from under him and while he’d do it a thousand times more for Christopher, he’s still processing. It’s hard to be around the crew right now when they’re still getting to do what he loves.

When Carrie chooses Alex to stand in for Dirty Candy’s only male dancer, he gets so excited and anxious that he has to go take deep breaths in the bathroom for at least five minutes.
When he gets the text bringing him onto Dirty Candy full-time, he has to go have another bathroom deep breathing session.
And to make it worse, Willie, the guy he'd replaced, seems determined to hate him, and Alex just can't figure out why.
Well, at least he gets to dance. And who knows? Maybe they'll get closer along the way...
