If Ilya was hurt, Shane would be the last one to find anything out, because on paper, they were nothing to each other. Less than nothing. Officially, they hated each other.
The thought of Ilya in that position—trapped on the other side of a locked hospital door, frantic, blind, and treated like an intrusive stranger—made his stomach twist with a violent wave of unease.
He couldn’t do that to him. He wouldn't.
OR
In a moment of impulsivity, Shane makes Ilya his legal healthcare proxy. When he's injured in the infamous Boston game, it takes everyone (including Ilya) by surprise.

"Shane," Bood says firmly. And it sounds so wrong, because Bood never calls him Shane. Shane is always Hollzy. And Bood's voice is supposed to be loud and steady, not shaky. And Shane finally, finally becomes aware enough of his surroundings to feel the trembling of Bood's hands against his waist. "Shane, please. They're working on him. We need to give them space so they can—so they can make sure he's okay."
"He's my husband," Shane chokes out, not quite managing to choke down the sob that's been building up long enough to boil over. Bood makes a similarly choked noise at that. "You need to let me go. He's my husband."
OR
Ilya gets injured on the ice during his and Shane's first season with the Centaurs. Shane loses his mind, a bit.

He must have gotten up too fast because his head spins in that light way it does when blood pressure doesn’t keep up. The adrenaline hasn’t settled out yet because his hands are still shaking, in fact all of him is still shaking. Why hasn’t he caught his breath yet? He presses a hand against the pinch in his chest like that might help. And why does it feel like there’s a rod jammed low in his sternum–
“Oh, fuck,” she says, her gaze sweeping him up and down.
He glances down to see what’s upset her – maybe she’s just offended that his cologne rubbed off on her or afraid he’ll blame her for the minor road rash that stings all the way up his left arm–
“Oh –” the knot in his chest is actually a hole and it’s bleeding over his hand “– fuck.”

Summary
Once upon a time, he gears himself to tell Galina. There was a man in Russia who was not nice to his wife. And maybe that was the beginning.
“The beginning?” Galina asks.
The man was not nice to his two sons either. The eldest grew up doing anything he could to earn his father’s approval. By the time he was a man, it was difficult to tell where his father's voice ended and his own began. He probably could have been saved. The youngest son could have done more. He could have saved his mother too.
Galina watches him for a long moment. Her notebook is placed on the side. It’s nice but also slightly unnerving, to have all of her attention on him. “How can a child be expected to save people? How can anyone have the responsibility of being a hero?”
Here’s the truth: the youngest son was too lazy to help.
