Rather than discard his civility, it appeared that Fire Lord Zuko weaponized it. Jian felt his respect for the boy grow as he observed his response to Admiral Lei’s continual and blatant disrespect.
“What would you do if I asked you to bring your son here to learn a certain lesson?” The Fire Lord let curiosity coat his words, vague and distant as if he did not truly care for the admiral’s answer.
If the room had been tense before, it was nothing compared to how tense it turned after everyone registered the implications of those words.

Summary
In an alternate universe of hunters and vampires, there is an arrangement that has lasted for millennia: arranged marriages between vampires and brides from hunter families. The vampire offers his protection, gives hunters strength and longevity through a marriage pact that is also a blood pact, and in return, is offered a human who is his, whom he can feed on, and who, according to the vows, essentially belongs to him. Such brides are raised and trained for this duty - this honor - from childhood.
Jan, coming from a storied hunter family, is offered to Bojan in such a marriage after his first husband is killed - an unorthodox decision, for hunter brides rarely remarry.
