Summary
In retrospect, it makes sense that it's Charles who understands first; of course it would be Charles. He's sitting on the other side of the waiting room from George when the door opens, so George, sitting there dumbly, gets the whole perfect slideshow presentation of it: Charles standing up, his face a ray of hope. Charles's hands falling loose to his rosso-corsa sides. Charles's face cracking open like someone's taken a hammer to it; crumbling apart like a sandcastle in the wind. He says, “No,” once, very quietly, and then he sits back down and doesn't get up.

Summary
Without the rivalry that ended badly in 2016, it feels easy. Too easy. Lewis and Nico fall into each other's lives like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Cars shared, sunglasses swapped, bags matching, laughter stitched through the years. After all, loving each other is as natural as breathing when you're with your best friend. They just don’t know it’s love until they realised everybody else around them already knew.

Summary
Nico never intended to be a reporter. They gossiped and speculated and spread rumours they had no business even thinking about. He liked some of them well enough, and he liked being able to cause a little chaos here and there by pointing out the shit that other reporters liked to gloss over. He never intended to retire from F1 alone, either, or that early into his career. It seemed like the right thing to do, at the time.
Lewis never intended to think about Nico this much, let alone on a race day. Then again, it's hard not to think about him when he's up in the commentary box showing pictures of the two of them as kids.
~
“We’ll win together, right?” he said after a long, long while.
Nico nodded, hearing his hair rustle over his pillowcase with the movement. It seemed unconscionably loud. “Of course, Lew. When we get to F1, we’ll be teammates, and we’ll win. Promise.”
“Promise,” Lewis repeated.
Nico didn’t know when he fell asleep, but he remembered the morning. He remembered waking up curled into Lewis like a sunflower towards the sun, and how it felt as natural as breathing to move a little closer and stave off the start of their day a little longer.

Summary
Every news article said that Lewis had lost the battle but won the war.
It didn’t feel like that, not really. It felt like he’d won the war but lost the reason he’d been fighting. Lost the one person who made victory worth fighting for.
--
Lewis and Nico break up after Nico wins the 2016 Driver’s Championship. Lewis chooses racing over Nico, and he’s convinced it’s the only choice he can make. But as the 2017 season begins, Lewis sees younger drivers falling in love and making their relationships work. Through his skepticism, he wonders if he let go of Nico too easily. He wonders if maybe he doesn’t have to choose between the two loves of his life after all.
