Aaron just rolls his eyes. “All right, then. Speedrun time.”
Neil blinks. “What?”
Aaron ignores this, instead counting off on his fingers. “Your mother’s burnt corpse is somewhere in California, you’ve had a hard-on for Kevin since you were ten, you’ve had more names than Andrew’s had cavities—”
Neil claps his hand right over Aaron’s terrible mouth. There’s panic rising in his throat. Anger too, maybe.
“Shut up,” Neil says, and Aaron shoots him a flat look, whispering something. The movement of his lips brushes at Neil’s palm, tingling so much it’s almost a type of pain.
He knows better than to move his hand, especially if Aaron said what he thinks he said, but. He has to know. So he does.
“Abram,” Aaron says again, so quietly, eyes steady on Neil’s, the only steady things in the universe as the world tilts beneath Neil’s feet.
What the fuck, Neil thinks. What the fuck.
Aaron and Neil find themselves caught in a time loop.

“Okay, let’s try this,” Aaron says. “Tell me five things you can see.”
“You,” Kevin says. It’s half a gasp. Aaron nods, raising one finger. It bolsters Kevin to see it, so he scrambles around for more. “The balcony. Riko. The French press. Your shitty sneakers.”
Aaron, with four fingers raised, quietly says, “Riko’s not here, Kevin.”
“What?” Kevin looks at him wildly. He blinks, trying to steady his gaze. Fuck. Okay. Yeah. Fuck. Aaron. He’s here with Aaron, which means Riko can’t be here, because they’ve never met. They belong to two different spheres of his life. “Uh. Your eyes.”
“I don’t think you’re meant to say me for three out of your five objects,” Aaron says, but his ears are tinging pink again. Kevin is endlessly fascinated by it.
Kevin Day makes a comeback.

“Hey, soldier,” Jeremy says, sliding into the space Andrew left.
Jean looks at him, and swallows. “Soldier?”
Jeremy smiles, small and bashful and with just a peek of teeth. Jean resists the urge to poke at his canines. “Y’know, wounded soldier, coming back from war,” he says, then bumps their shoulders together, gesturing down at his knee. “You hurt your knee, right?”
“Does that make you the loyal wife awaiting his return from the war?” Allison asks archly, glancing over from Renee, Dan and Seth to look at Jeremy.
Jean doesn’t think he can cope with an answer to that question, so he quickly says to Jeremy, “Sort of.”
Jean gets a mysterious injury, Jeremy is distracted, Katelyn is shipping, Allison is scheming and Kevin just wants to study for their midterm. The rest of the Foxes also have opinions, obviously.

Summary
Aaron had looked at Kevin then, tilting his head. “Are you still thirsty?” he’d asked.
Kevin had licked his lips—a subconscious movement, but it had brought the taste of Aaron back to the forefront and he’d swallowed, hard.
“You’re suffering blood loss as it is,” he’d said, the words clunky in his mouth. Awkward, too-gentle.
“That’s not an answer,” Aaron had said, narrowing his eyes, but Kevin had looked at him.
“Isn’t it?” he’d murmured, before slipping past him, to stand at the edge.
It’s not every day you go monster-hunting and end up with a pet vampire instead. Aaron really just wanted a dog, but he supposes this isn’t so bad.

“I’m not in denial,” Aaron says plainly. It’s not his own feelings he was ever worried about, he realizes—it’s always been the threat of Kevin’s that scares the shit out of him. Kevin, who has never known how to follow posted speed limits and runs reds because he can, because no one has ever told him he shouldn’t, probably likes him. Probably definitely. He’s afraid that one day he’ll realize he doesn’t.
Maybe that’s the heart of the issue. There’s precedence for this. Aaron has spent a long time being jerked around by people who love him for a period. It hurts, still, that his mother doesn’t know how to want him; that Andrew’s apathy is hard to interpret as caring sometimes; that Katelyn decided it wasn’t working after all. But that’s not very accurate data. Not that it matters. Kevin and him were never supposed to be together—that was their agreement.

Aaron wants to enact violence—is thrumming with it—and he totally would have if Kevin didn’t bend forward to push his lips against his. It’s a slow, lazy sort of kiss, the kind that makes Aaron’s heart surge and swell without his consent. A problem, one that reminds him he is outside the bounds of their agreement. But that’s impossible for Aaron to think about when Kevin whispers, “Bed?” against his mouth. Aaron exchanges the no at the tip of his tongue for a yes and decides, in the spirit of not making his birthdays shitty anymore, that he’d set aside the problem and contemplate it tomorrow.

He does not want to be in South Carolina, but he is. He does not want to be part of a Perfect Court that does not involve Riko, but he will have to be.
Kevin, learning French for him and using it against him the moment he could because if he didn’t have Jean, he wouldn’t make it out. Nathaniel and Andrew, taking the time to bring him along, to talk about him, to force him into a car and away from a man who speared all his pain into Jean’s skin.
Riko, taking on a useless Moreau and making him number three.
Jean drags his fingers down his face and doesn’t stop until he feels his pulse beating out of him through his neck. Too fast, he thinks, not sure how he knows. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

Summary
“What’s their deal anyway?”
“Andrew’s afraid of romance,” Kevin answers, bored. With a little more concern, he asks, “I’m not on speakerphone, am I?” Aaron snorts and confirms he isn’t, and he’d have been fine anyway since there’s a whole closed door between him and Andrew. Kevin goes on. “But history suggests they will figure it out.” There’s a pause in which Aaron thinks Kevin wants him to be bolstered by his words, but he really is shit at offering any kind of real encouragement. Aaron flips his hand in the air and makes a noncommittal noise, and Kevin interprets that however he wants.
“Aaron,” Kevin says, serious. It’s a complete tonal shift, so Aaron braces for what he thinks he might say next. “You and I—we’re better at arguing than they are. Do you agree?”
“What,” Aaron says, relaxing but still exasperated, “are you talking about? Kevin, we argue all the time.”
“Yeah, but not about anything serious. Don’t pick a fight with me right now.”
Spoiler: Aaron does pick a fight with Kevin, and on the road to resolution, they acknowledge something new—or maybe not so new—about each other.

Kevin breezes past that. “Date me,” he says again, more insistent.
Aaron takes his hand away from his nose and makes several cutting gestures before he decides on what to say next. “You’re not dateable.”
“No—what? Fuck you, I totally am. I told you not to pick a fight with me.”
