“You're still mad” Dakota said then, letting out a long sigh.
“I'm not mad, I just don't care anymore”
Dakota felt a twinge in his heart, and as he thought about his next reply, he paused to observe Liam: how the wind ruffled the damp strands of hair escaping from his bun, how he had goosebumps on his arms and legs from the cold, still covered in droplets that slid slowly down, how summer had begun to tan his skin and lighten the blonde in his hair.
“Do you really not care?” Dakota sounded more affected than he intended.
“Yes, and you should do the same” Liam nodded vaguely.

This story is set a few months after the first fanfic I wrote about them, but you can read it as a standalone story, even though there are occasional references to that “last night”.

Skylar gave him one last smile before walking over to her friends, saying goodbye to each of them with big hugs and kisses on the cheeks. That explained the kiss from earlier; they weren’t dating anymore, they were friends, and it was both a relief and painful at the same time.
The thought was quickly interrupted when he realized that her friends included Liam. Of course they did; he’d seen him right at the start of the game, his heart sinking with guilt for having noticed his blond curls before Skylar’s face in the front row.

Shane looked at the reporter, then at his mother, who gave him a determined look and a slight nod, and then back at the reporter. But his mind was elsewhere.
His mind was with Ilya, replaying all the moments they had spent together over the last few days, how Ilya had confided in him about the most vulnerable part of his life, about his mother, how he had told him, for the first time in all these years, that he loved him, and how now the words came so naturally from his mouth.
