Summary
Will was stupid for thinking Hawkins would wait for him, for thinking that the little slice he carved out for himself within the Party would remain immutable. Will was stupid for hoping that despite the lack of calls and letters, he and Mike were still best friends.
After Mike's visit, Will saw it all clearly. Mike was no longer his best friend, or friend at all. Their friendship had been forged by proximity, and now the only thing still tying them together was… El.
Will would not be stupid any longer. He was going to make some changes, and fast. Lenora Hills could be good for him—he could be someone else.
_______________________
TLDR: Timeline divergence where none of the events of S4V1 occur besides Mike Wheeler landing at the airport and ignoring Will. Will retaliates by integrating into Lenora Hills High and dating a girl from his history class. But, when Mike comes back for the first week of summer vacation, a party trick gone awry leads to some serious revelations.

Summary
In his almost 17 years being alive, Will has learned many things. Very high on that list is that there’s a fine line between “best friend” and “something more.”
Michael Wheeler uses that line like a fucking jump rope.
“You… wish I had saved just you?”
or; Mike and Will chat after the Mac-Z

Summary
“Will, I love you very much,” Max starts, “but there’s no way your weird little coffee shop freak has a girlfriend.”
“His name is Mike,” Will says, because he would know, because he’s the one that’s been writing Mike :) in sharpie on his to-go cups for the last six months, “and he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He has a wife.”
Will’s favorite regular comes in with a girl. Clearly, they’re married.

Summary
Mike doesn’t answer. He just smirks.
And then suddenly, Will is falling backward onto the bed. A quick movement, barely any warning. The next thing he knows, he’s sitting on Mike’s lap. His hands immediately grab onto Mike’s shoulders to steady himself.
“What the hell,” he breathes.
“Hi,” Mike says, grinning.
He leans in for a kiss, but Will presses a hand to his face, stopping him.
“We have only forty minutes left, Michael,” Will says, doing his best to keep his voice annoyed.

Summary
“... Will.”
“Okay, sure, yeah. What about him?”
“I’m a bad friend.” Mike admitted, breathing it out like a vomited confession, like something he was desperate to be rid of.
“Did something happen?” Steve asked.
“Yes.” He paused. “Well, no. It’s— it’s more like… more like… he got a boyfriend.” Mike huffed out a breath.
“I know.” Steve agreed slowly, brows raised. “Carlton. Will, Robin and I met up a while back and he introduced us. Seems like a good kid. What about him?”
Mike felt like a fucking idiot.
Of course Steve didn’t get it. Why would Steve get it?
“I… I just…” How was Mike even meant to begin to talk about this? “It’s driving me crazy, man. I hate the guy.”
OR -
Mike spirals about his feelings, gets in his car, and somehow ends up going to Steve Harrington for help. He gets a much-needed pep talk and finally goes after what he wants.
