Any work at sea was dangerous because of the merfolk and you had learned early to be wary, to watch the water and the fish and to react fast the second something felt even a smidgeon off to you. You had no desire to get attacked again, to add to the scars you already carried on your body.
Mers were monsters in your opinion and the less you had to do with them the better - right up until the day you met one of the most dangerous mers of your life. A siren with eyes bluer than the sky and sea combined and hair the color of shimmering frost. Where others saw a divinely beautiful creature all you saw was death smiling back at you.
