Kevin didn’t look up when Neil neared, simply said: “I can’t answer your questions, Neil.”
“What,” Neil said, a bit breathlessly and endlessly curious, “are you so afraid of?”
And something about Kevin - flickered. Something in his shoulders and in his head as it hung, just for a moment, in defeat. He looked impossibly tired, exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with sleep and everything to do with the burdens they both ignored were there.
“Monsters are real, Neil.”
“I know.”
