“Please, please, please, please, please. I love Ons and her husband, you know that, but all they want to do on double dates is play board games, and Dasha will not shut her camera off for, like, five seconds, and Carlos and Jannik are so young, and—”
“Okay, okay!” Aryna pressed both hands over Paula’s mouth to shut her up. “One date. One.”
Paula licked her palm, and Aryna immediately snatched her hands away in disgust, but accepted Paula throwing her arms around her and cradling her head to her chest. “You won’t regret this,” she said, smacking a kiss against her hair. “I promise.”
[or, five times Paula tries to set Aryna up + one time she takes matters into her own hands.]

Summary
They didn’t know about the nights he woke up with his stomach splitting straight down the middle, they didn’t know about the hand of a vengeful god that seemed to guide more and more of his shots, they didn’t know what it was like to feel tethered to something, someone outside of your control. Someone—
Consumed in his quiet raging, Daniil almost missed Stefanos about to walk by him on the skywalk. His field of vision narrowed to a singular point, shaded in red. He seized Stefanos by the wrist as he passed, halting him in place.
“Stop losing,” he hissed.
[In the opening tournaments of the season, Stefanos blows a match at United Cup and Daniil self-destructs in Adelaide. Not even two weeks later, after Daniil crashes out of the Australian Open in the third round, so does Stefanos. What starts as a series of strange coincidences quickly develops into a pattern: if one of them loses, they both do.]

Summary
For the rest of his shift and while pedaling home, all Jannik could think about was Carlos. He tried to reconcile the opponent Frances described, the one who had everyone else running scared, with the boy he saw tonight, who seemed to smile as though he had joy in an endless supply. Jannik didn’t want to underestimate him, but he didn’t want to be scared either.
By the way his stomach flipped when Carlos first saw him, the choice might have been made for him.
[In the heat of the high school tennis season, Jannik inherits Daniil’s varsity spot—and a new rival.]

Summary
That night in Turin, neither of them had known they were standing at a precipice, of dizzying heights and of ceilings they’d have trouble breaking. Daniil, despite every time he had ignored Casper’s calls and slammed real and metaphorical doors in his face, knew he could count on him through every high and low, even when he didn’t deserve it. Tennis, rivalry, quarter and semi exits at each other’s hands, titles snatched from just within reach—well, he might have ignored Casper’s calls for longer, slammed the door harder, and Casper might not have found it so easy to forgive him.
“We can play in Canada,” Casper proposed, dragging Daniil out of the past and back into the present moment, both of them losers with flights to catch. “You can beat me there.”
[Daniil is beginning to think he and Casper are cursed to never play a professional match again. He doesn’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.]

Summary
Jannik’s not sure how they ended up here. Five minutes ago, he’d been coming back from the awkward post-victory photoshoot in the Center Court lounge, stopping by the deserted cafeteria for a coffee and to massage his aching quads. He hadn’t expected anyone else to join him except maybe Darren and Simone, though they’d said their goodbyes already. If anyone, it certainly would not have been Ben Shelton, who by all logic should have skipped town after Jannik avenged his Shanghai loss.
But here they are. And what’s he supposed to say—no?
Schlutzkrapfen, sambuca, and the seventeen hours between Vienna and Paris.
