Deep within the veil, a flickering light stands still. A woman, tall for an elf, yet plain of height for a human, sat playing chess within her own mind.
Rook De Riva was not the likeliest of heroes, at least she would tell you this herself if you asked. Yet no one had, ever, simply asked. One man in particular believed that she could make something truly out of her life, rather than the odd string that fate had tugged at her with all those years: a dwarf with a knack for trouble, tales (some tall), and eyeing talent. He had plucked her with such deft after hearing of her tale, drawing out the rumours and lies, and kept within himself, her story and tears- with only but two angles, keeping the heat off the Crow as he had promised Viago (as well as keeping her safe, though this was a secret he kept for Viago), and keeping her past hidden. All she would have to do is aid him in his quest to save the world.
But that tale has been told, of the Veilguard that took down the dread wolf. What was left out was the tale behind the elf herself. Dead men tell no secrets, and thus Varric's words lay silent. Yet one detective sought to find this truth, as remnants of Rook's rose.
