Inej Ghafa was a hungry young girl, a runaway from every place she’d ever been. She was no stranger to the world, no stranger to the wind. Wherever it was this young girl went, The Fates were close behind.
Kaz Brekker was the son of a muse, a bastard some might say. And you know how those Muses are; sometimes they abandon you. This boy with leather gloved hands had a way with words, a way with cards, a way with cons. Anything Kaz Brekker wanted he took, Fates be damned.
And on the road to hell toward Hadestown, the same old song was sung again.

Kaz squints at her. “Are you a student, Inej?”
And, oh, no.
Her name sounds exactly right in his rock salt rasp. It spells trouble. She shakes it off and tries to focus on answering the question. She supposes that in a different world she could be a student. She would live in a cozy apartment with some other girls, and this would just be a part-time job, so she would have time to attend lectures and write papers and go on dates.
But Inej does not live in that world. She lives in this one.

Inej Ghafa is a principal dancer of the Kerch National Ballet, haunted by a past she'd rather forget. Kaz Brekker is a mob boss who holds the city in the palm of his hand.
Perhaps if all were right with the world, two such people would never meet. Or perhaps fate will always give those who need each other a push in the right direction.
It begins, as so many things in Ketterdam do, with a murder.
