Summary
Ding, ding, Lupe. A marvel of a woman. She spins around, all Hollywood. Got a dish rag in one hand and a dish in the other, an obligatory smudge of red velvet on her lips, tethering out all pink the further away from the blotch of her mouth, and she's a glowering, mean, immovable object. Lupe works in binary ways: Yes‘s and Nos. It’s apparent from the line of her body that the grease stains on her navy apron, not her shirt. And then she speaks, and her voice is something so sonorous, so divine and melodic, oak-dark-pitched, gut-deep—
„Get the fuck out.“ -

Summary
They fucked the first night Jess came back to Lupe’s apartment. It was a bad move on all parts, made things messy and tangled in a way there was no coming back from. Jess just wanted to feel good again, and so did Lupe, and the easiest way to accomplish that was pressing her own body against that wound-up thing Lupe called hers.
Jess and Lupe are broken up but Jess has to move back into Lupe’s apartment. -

Summary
The book is dog eared, the cover cracking with horizontal lines around the binding from bending it over and over — she‘s read it a dozen times. And she’s pretty sure Lupe knew this because she didn’t hide the letter in Jess‘s suitcase or fold it between her clothes where she could have found it on time and said something about it. No, Lupe is anything if not evasive and Jess is pretty sure she knew Jess wouldn’t pick the book back up until she was already on the train or in her childhood bedroom. That's why she put it there, neatly tucked between two pages right toward the end.
All it says is „To Jess“, in her handwriting and for the first few weeks, that’s all Jess reads of it.
Jess spends the winter in Canada, Lupe is in Texas.

Summary
Jess undeniably loved women, but she didn’t like to be touched. The way her brothers yammered and howled about the women they fooled around with gave her a stirring feeling in her stomach, hot and cold in twisting turns, like a fish flopping on land desperate for the water. She never wanted that. The joking. The dominance. The belittling. The rude details. The expectation that felt like a spiked cage.
And then Jess had met Lupe Garcia.

Summary
Jess’ eyes flash between the train ticket and Lupe’s face. Lu is smirking and her cheeks are tinged red.
"Are you fucking with me, Garcia?" Is the first thing that comes out of Jess’ mouth once the initial shock has passed.
"Y’know, I always thought Saskatchewan would be nice in fall. No better time to cross it off my bucket list, right?"
