"I'd like to try again." Tighnari says, having just finished telling Cyno the story of his first and last venture out into the desert in search of information about his ancestor's and the hypothesized main race branch, the Valuka Shuna. Cyno raises his head.
"You want to go into the desert?"
"Yes. I'm sure I can handle the heat better now. I loathe to be in it, but I'll survive long enough to at least reach my destination. The history of my people has always been one to pique my curiosity. I think it's about time I sate that desire- if you would be so kind as to be my guide?"
"I would have been offended if you asked anyone else. Of course I will. Does tomorrow morning sound good? Don't worry about the supplies, just bring yourself."

"Yes." Wind blows over the mountain range, pulling Baizhu's long, meticulously woven braid into disarray. Slips of silver peek through the coils of green. Color bleeding away, the way life bleeds red from a body, long after it has gone stiff and cold. "I loved him."
"And me?"
Even under the mellow spring sunshine, Baizhu's face is pale and ill. He gazes across the sea of tree-covered cliffs spread out before them, and the crashing roar of the waterfalls drown out the low, slow sound of his breathing.
"I hardly know you."

Summary
The boy named Zandik likes a few things- machinery, knowledge, lies, and Baizhu.
Machines can be repaired, knowledge passed down, lies maintained, but Baizhu is dying, irrevocably and irreversibly, the same way a candle flickers and sputters in damp air before gasping away into darkness.
He lives, he dies. He lives, he dies.
Zandik plucks the petals from a wilting lily and wonders, hazily, how much death he would be willing to barter for Baizhu's life.
(The answer would make Celestia scream.)
OR: Dottore sends a younger segment back to the Akademiya. Zandik meets a boy named Baizhu, and is reminded that despite his best efforts, he is not incapable of caring.
