Shauna’s eyes are wide and shining, pupils blown to hell, dark enough to swallow every thought Jackie might’ve had. Her lashes are damp, stuck together in glossy tips, haloed with tears she hasn’t blinked away. And there’s a streak of spit curving down the soft plane of her cheek, thin and silver and obscene.
For a second, Jackie feels the urge to reach down. To wipe it away with the pad of her thumb. To clean her up. To do something gentle, something kind.
