The year is 1904, in Lumiere - society is heavily based around art and artists, in an attempt to try and get the royal family back. Anyone who falls outside that category is simply an outcast. In a family of well-respected writers: Gustave Auclair, an engineer, and his little sister, Maelle, a swordswoman, fall into that category of misfits. Not that they mind, they have their supportive family, as well as each other. What more could they want?
Verso Dessendre, the cursed and lost prince of Lumiere, only has six months to rid his family of the curse that had been set upon them by a sorceress ten years ago. Otherwise, on his 33rd birthday, his whole cursed family will turn to stone. They all had their faults, there were many reasons they were cursed, but Verso in particular has the hardest task of all: to take back a lie he had said. To care and love someone, and have that care and love reciprocated. After an Earthquake and subsequent fracture, their castle broke apart from the main country, forming their own little continent. They hadn't seen a real person in a decade.
It was hopeless... right?

Alex knows he’s been off lately.
Not in a way that anyone can point to—nothing too loud or obvious. Nothing that would prompt questions or concern from his friend. A longer pause where he used to answer easily, or a smile that now arrives a second too late. The way he sometimes looks at Henry but then looks away, like he’s caught himself doing something reckless.
And it’s his fault. Alex knows that much.
But feelings don’t ask for permission. They slip in quietly, settle where they don’t belong, and suddenly everything familiar feels tilted. Shifted.
Or: As deeper feelings settle in Alex's heart, he must come to terms with the fact that his best friend, Henry, now has a boyfriend.

Summary
Gustave Écrivain turns down a marriage proposal from Verso Dessendre, despite his supposed confession of love, because the proposal is filled with more insults than anything else.
But over the following months, he discovers there is much more to Verso Dessendre than first appeared, and when his life is saved because of Verso's intervention, he has to reconsider everything he has known as truth up until this point.
While Gustave is convinced that Verso would never again propose, as their families gravitate toward each other once more, he can't help but hoping that some of Verso's regard might linger and leave the door open for more.
