Summary
Albert’s arms tightened around William’s waist as a reminder that he was present. William attempted to roll onto his opposite side, Albert let out an annoyed grunt but loosened his hold to let him move. In the dark of their room, William could just barely make out the features of Albert’s face. Tired, half lidded eyes glared William down with a frown of exasperation.
“What’s wrong?” William questioned.
“I had nearly fallen asleep, that’s all.”

Summary
Of course, Nanba had been one of the earliest people he’d presented one of Bartender’s bouquets to. When Nanba had come in for a drink after his shift at the host club Hello Work had hooked him up with, Ichiban had practically pounced on him, a fresh rose bouquet in hand and a smile on his face.
Nanba had held the flowers at a distance, looking them over like they were something foreign. “Aren’t you only supposed to give roses to people you love?”
“Huh?”
“Roses,” Nanba had elaborated, tilting the bouquet towards him like Ichiban had no idea what kind of flowers he’d bought, planted, and nurtured. “It’s like, a thing you give to people you really love.”
Ichiban hadn’t had an answer to that, right away. Was Nanba trying to be funny? If he was, he didn’t get the joke. “Yeah, man. I do love you.”
Nanba had huffed a laugh through his nose, and set the bouquet down on a table.
“Sorry to hear that.”

Summary
Stephen noted this pattern often in surly patients cured of a lingering pain: a miraculous improvement in temperament, earthly angels the morning after they damned him to hell. This did not bother him, of course. He was soothed at the reminder that man was a creature of circumstance, and that improvement of the spirit was tied to the improvement of the material conditions. In nature, in man, in society: where pain fermented, evils brewed.
What bothered him was the disproportionate gratitude towards him, personally. And it bothered him, too, that he could not wish this sailor a proper goodnight, because he did not remember the sailor's name.Stephen and Jack talk on a cold night during their first cruise on the Sophie.
