The problem is that Klaasje is the exact opposite of Ruby’s type. Ruby’s always liked women with big voices and bigger tits; women who see her and zero in on her and want to be fucked by her. Ruby’s liked that power since she was a teenager; it makes life interesting. Klaasje wears makeup but she does it poorly, a performance on purpose. She dashes blue mascara through her eyelashes and blue eyeshadow into the sockets of her eyes, accentuating the bags underneath. It isn’t that Klaasje doesn’t have sex appeal; she clearly does. But she’s out of control and Ruby likes women who know what they want.

It makes sense, Klaasje realizes. Something in Ruby’s posture has been strained since she opened the door; she’s been speaking softly, as if it's taking her considerable effort just to fulfill this basic task.
Klaasje empathizes, even if a selfish, voiceless part of her psyche had been hoping that Ruby was (possibly, maybe, perhaps, conceivably) knocking on her door at this time of night for far less decent reasons.
