Kaveh stands in the open doorframe, sleepshirt swallowing him. His throat clicks, and he opens his mouth just to close it again. He rubs his arm awkwardly. Alhaitham does not speak, just waits patiently, until the seconds pass and Kaveh seems to muster up to courage to reply. “I’m cold,” he says.
“You’re cold?” Alhaitham repeats. His eyes narrow.
“I’m cold,” Kaveh says again, looking directly into Alhaitham’s eyes. “I’ve been so cold, Alhaitham. I can’t sleep.”

Kaveh steps into the world as perfect and prim, just like the architect that everyone thinks that he is.

Just how far can he go before the strain consumes him entirely?
Maybe the people of Sumeru were right about him. Maybe he was just like his mother.
At least now, he could understand her a little better.

Genuinely written so well. Kaveh’s grief goes through so many different stages, and the depiction of each one is exactly how I would expect them to go for him. His dynamic with every character he interacts with feels so natural and fleshed out, even if short.
