The boat is rocking heavily as they move through deep swells and Tapio not only holds steady on his feet, but is steady with what looks like a very sharp knife. If he nicked himself, it’s because his mind is elsewhere.

Wei Ying thinks so often of his last night in Beijing that it’s almost predictable he would one day conjure Lan Zhan from his thick-cottoned memories. It shouldn’t be a shock when he does it, animates his own memory so completely that he’s met with a vision of Lan Zhan coming toward him from Mott Street in long strides.
It’s been thirteen years and there he is, as if Wei Ying has not spent those years questioning whether the real Lan Zhan could possibly be everything he remembers him to be, questioning whether it’s possible such a person existed at all.
