"Dying a thousand times had only reinforced the visceral disgust. Her blood had pulsed onto snow, onto dirt, into water. She was mixed with all parts of nature, and the only thing keeping her together was a membrane. Sometimes as her pulse quickened at Himeko’s touch, a silly fear would strike her that her heart would fall from her chest. Laughter would bubble from her, and Himeko would always ask “What is it?” but Chikane would swallow and submerge the memories of seeing her own bones through layers of torn muscle and tell her “Nothing, at all.”
Himeko’s veins seemed even more fragile. She knew, more intimately than she ever would have hoped, just how fragile."
