Colin Bridgerton rarely dreamt of his father, certainly not in the last ten years. So when Edmund appeared, dapper as ever in an immaculate blue suit, Colin was caught off guard. But the familiar warmth in his father's eyes was shadowed by a deep, weary sadness, a look Colin had only seen once before, long ago, after a mishap involving Eloise's birthday cake.
“You're in for a long night, my son,” Edmund said solemnly. “I wish things had been different... that you didn’t have to face what lies ahead alone.”
What follows is a night Colin could never have imagined, as his late father warns him of three ghostly visitors who will arrive to help him confront the parts of his life that have gone astray. Is it just a dream, or something more?

"Will you two — can you behave tonight?" Eloise says, exasperation in her voice and her nose scrunched up.
Colin wears an innocent face. "I can't think what you mean. Penis and I always behave."
"I swear to God —" Penelope hisses, plonking the wine down hard on the counter. "You both have to stop with that —"
"I mean it!" Eloise exclaims as she goes over to the large bowl of salad on the side and begins to toss it aggressively. "None of your usual Pen-and-Colin shit, please. Edwina's bringing someone new, and I want him to think we're… normal." She sighs, shoulders sagging. "Normal-ish. Normal enough that he doesn't run screaming." Her eyes narrow. "And if I'm honest I'd rather avoid another evening of you two bitching at each other."
"We don't bitch," Colin insists, though they do, in fact, bitch. "Penelope is my dearest friend."

To Colin, the narrative is clear. The sweet sidekick best friend is going to end up with the main character, everyone will cheer, they'll all worship at the altar of a series well done and then beg their mum to let them start series five instead of going to bed. She'll almost immediately cave, allowing quick toilet breaks and re-fluffing of pillows (maybe even an exchange of blankets) before they all settle back into the cosy pile that is their Friday nights.
But here is the problem, and it's a problem that they have never had before when watching a film or show together: Penelope Featherington disagrees with him.
Disagrees. With him.
She seems irked every time he brings up the couple's very clear soulmatism, which is getting on Colin's nerves because he's right, and no matter what show they're watching, Penelope has always agreed before.
So what's different this time?
