All she could grab ahold of in her mind’s eye was the dark corridor of Judy’s apartment and a closed bedroom door. Behind it, a weak voice. A whisper, begging for something.
Lorraine sat up and ran her hands over her face; the longer she laid still, the faster her heart skipped, and she couldn’t bear the uncertainty. She felt Judy’s fear and couldn’t stand to go to sleep with it pushing against her own mind.
“I’m calling her,” said Lorraine while she tossed away the duvet and set her feet to the floor. She was down the stairs before Ed could say a thing.

She lays in bed in the dark, curtains drawn, for nearly a day with her rosary wrapped so tightly around her hand that the beads carve bruised divots into her palm. Mumbling the latinate prayers she was raised on, she allows her surroundings to fade. The world whittles down to the mattress under her body, the afghan pressing against her cheek, and the beads wound into her fingers.

Summary
Ed looked at her, knowing she felt pretty and was enjoying the good food, and his chest twitched with the urge to tell her everything he felt. To tell her how soft her skin looked, how warm her smile made him feel, how happy he was to do all this and make her happy for a little while.
How he wished they could stay here in their laughter, just like this, and never have to hurt again.
