Zhou Zishu's gaze lowers to his wrist, circled in red. The thread there that once wound around it in a closed loop, currently stretches out into the dark—unmoving and constant, undisturbed by the late summer breeze.

Perhaps Wen Kexing should have known better. On top of the ever-expanding list of lessons he ought to have learned long ago is written in bold strokes 'Nothing ever goes according to plan.'
