When witness protection lands a broken and disheartened Trafalgar Law in Dawn City, he only had two expectations: a life of erasure, or death. He leaned strongly towards the latter.
He was really not expecting him and the weird guy in a straw hat with a service dog to get dragged into an unfolding international conflict. And he expected even less to rediscover the beautiful and tragic things that give life purpose.

Summary
He’s a little thing, maybe four or five years old if she had to guess, and that would be concerning enough considering he’s alone in the woods, a quarter of the way up a mountain and at least a mile away from civilization all by his lonesome. But Nami’s always been the observant type of person; had to be, to get by for most of her life, and to be a good navigator, and this kid? This kid is setting off all the warning bells in her mind. Not the kid himself, mind you; but at all the little details that are telling her that he really should not be here.
When Law goes missing during a stop on a quiet, out-of-the-way island, the Hearts and the visiting Straw Hats immediately drop everything to find him. But instead of the captain, they find a small boy with a familiar face who just wants to go home.
As investigations into the strange nature of the island and what has happened bear fruit, both crews are left with the uncomfortable realization that they don't know how to predict how or if Law will be able to return.
Or worse: if he'll even want to come back at all.

“Good evening,” Law said calmly. “I am looking for…” he looked down at the medical chart in his hands. “Monkey D. Luffy.”
The boy on the bed smiled immediately when he heard his name, a curious and excited look in his eyes.
“That’s me!” He shouted out. “Are you the doctor? They said that they were sending a doctor before dinner and I am really hungry, so if you are the doctor this means that I am gonna eat soon!”
The two men in the room groaned at that sentence and Law felt taken aback by the enthusiasm of the guy. He was either stupid or not aware of the gravity of his injury, if his only thought was dinner.
“Yes, I am the surgeon that will operate on you,” he answered. “My name is Trafalgar Law.”*
Law is a surgeon who needs some light in his life.

Law kisses Luffy like it’s both a wound and a prayer, like tearing himself open might somehow keep the light from leaving. Luffy’s laughter spills into the cracks, filling the spaces Law thought would always ache, warmth that is steady and unshaken, like the promise of morning. Somewhere in Luffy’s blinding smile, Law sees Corazon’s ghost: gold slipping into his fractures, whispering, This is what I wanted for you.

Chopper sighs and runs a hand through his short hair. “We need to talk about something first.”
“No, we don’t,” Law states and tries to calm down. “I want to see him now.”
“You cannot, Trafalgar,” Serena interjects. He looks at her with eyes burning with concern. “The situation is not the best right now and you need to listen to us carefully.”
Sabo and Ace are not looking at him, Chopper seems sorry and Serena is way too serious for his liking.
“Can any of you tell me what the fuck is going on with my-”
