It wasn't denial; you had understood perfectly well what was going on, Crocus having been patient enough the day after the announcement to answer all your questions as clearly as possible. But you simply felt it was more important not to waste time talking about his inevitable death so that you could share as many good times as possible with the captain before he dies.
