Summary
As if summoned by his words, his own cell phone starts vibrating on the side table.
Tommy grabs it and answers wryly, “No one I know would call at this hour.”
“My dad did something wrong,” Chris says.
“I need to talk,” comes Eddie’s flustered voice down the line.
“What’s the matter?” Evan and Tommy say simultaneously, glancing at each other with raised eyebrows.

Everyone else is in a telenovela. Buck is in a rom-com.

Summary
The elevator ride passes silently, Buck staring determinedly at the doors as he fights to control the emotions rising in him. After what feels like an eternity, the elevator arrives at their level and Buck exits with Tommy behind him.
“Bathrooms are down the hall to the left,” the nurse calls out to them. “Might want to take care of… all of that,” he gestures to the bottom half of his face as the doors close behind him, silence ringing for a moment.
“Evan…” Tommy starts.

Summary
“What do you need, Johnny?” She’s a little teary. Like she knows something he doesn't.
“Nothing,” Johnny says. Cause it’s the fucking truth.
Need isn’t the same thing as want, Kathy. What I want is something I’m never getting.

Summary
Tommy Kinard's life changes for the better when his old friend Chimney calls him out of the blue for help on a rescue and he meets the adorably awkward Evan "Buck" Buckley.
EXCERPT:
Was this man looking down to see the hand or – no. No. Tommy knew it couldn’t be checking out. That wasn’t happening here.
The guy took Tommy’s hand and shook it. Kept shaking it as he said, “Evan! Evan Buckley. Or Buck. Whatever you, uh. Want to call me is fine.”
And it wouldn’t hurt to be a little friendly, could it? Evan didn’t seem to mind as Tommy leaned only a touch closer, looking into the man’s unwavering eyes as Tommy asked, “Are you sure you don’t have a preference, Evan?”
That.
That wasn’t blush. That wasn’t bashfulness as Evan’s eyes turned away. This had to be what Evan always sounded like as he mumbled at the ground, still shaking Tommy’s hand, “Evan’s fine.”

Summary
Evan had also been the gentle part of him, the soft part that had never understood why he hadn’t been good enough to be loved—not by his parents, and not by the women he’d hoped, over and over again, would see him as more than a one-night stand. And there was this part of him that felt like maybe he was ready to be Evan again, ready to remember that piece of himself, to embrace it, to acknowledge that it was part of him—with the right people, the people who deserved it.

The Buckley parents really don't like that Tommy gets to call Buck 'Evan' and they do not.

Summary
Buck is exhausted right down to the core of him, body aching from the last 48 hours of his shifts—his throat is bruised and sore, reducing his voice down to a hoarse whisper, and his ribs hurt from where he’d gotten knocked into a concrete barrier during a rescue, and his bad leg is throbbing so badly from the barometric pressure change that comes with the Santa Ana winds that he’s limping around his apartment. He wants to cry a little he’s so tired, and then there's a knock at his door and it's the last person he was expecting, and if he's honest with himself, the exact person he was yearning to see.
