Cinder plucks Emerald out of the darkness when she's twelve. She's hunkered down behind a dumpster, gnawing on a stale loaf of bread she lifted from the back of a grocery store, when the shadow falls across her lap. She freezes; she's cornered and she knows it, the only thing to do is give them hell if they try to grab her. But then she looks up and her heart seizes. The woman smiling down at her is lovely, and distinctly inhuman. Her eyes glow with otherworldly light and her inky hair moves independently of the wind, coiling around her throat. When she smiles, her teeth come to points.

His name is Faustus. He is going to be a Frumentarius. He has to deliver this message to the Courier. He is going to chant this as long as his journey lasts. He has been on the road for one night and two days as of this morning. He will deliver his missive and begin his return today. There is simply no other option. Once the message is successfully delivered he is officially a Frumentarius, and his first assignment is to escort Frumentarius Nerva to New Rome. They are due in four days. If he fails his name is not Faustus; he will not be a Frumentarius; he will not be a messenger; he will not be a citizen of the Legion. It will be the Frumentarii's responsibility to execute him for being a sentient non-person unaligned with the Legion, he hopes. Unless it is Nerva's responsibility to escort him to the nearest Legion-affiliated foothold in the desert to have him hanged from a cross.
