Summary
Albus Dumbledore never saw the front line again for a long, long time. He wielded the elder wand and he continued because he was Albus Dumbledore, the brave, the most powerful, the revered and the feared. His life continued, despite him feeling like he'd lived too many lives in one lifetime, to prevent greater harm because he had dared to dream of the greater good.
No one ever told Gellert that the man he loved would one day stand over him, eyes full of sorrow instead of triumph, and choose to protect the world from him rather than rule it with him.
Years later, in the stone silence of Nurmengard, Grindelwald will close his eyes and still remember exactly how Albus tasted (like lightning and blackcurrant jam and the future they were never allowed to have).
