Jack Abbot would say that he is appropriately on edge given that it’s the Fourth of fucking July. It’s only in recent years that he’s even able to be conscious and upright on this date so by all means, he considers walking through Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s front doors sober and on time for shift change a fucking win. His therapist would probably disagree. He would probably say that trading in his long treasured July 4th pastime of locking himself in his cabin in the Alleghenies and sedating himself into the deepest sleep his body is capable of for a volunteer position of throwing himself into active fire and dodging bullets for sport is not the progress he thinks it is. God forbid he picks up a golf club or goes to the batting cages or any other semi-normal, well-adjusted middle aged man hobby.
Still, when he walks back into the emergency department just a little over three hours after he last left, he can immediately sense the shift in the air.

It happened slowly, Jack thinks. Like a frog that doesn’t know better when the pot of water begins to boil, he let his feelings for one Dr. Samira Mohan simmer quietly in the background of night shifts and hand-offs and sutures and motor vehicle accidents and heart attacks and he never stopped to think that he needed to snap out of it until it was too late, and he was pretty sure the idea of her had wedged itself so tightly into some previously-empty space at the center of his heart that there was no removing it without shattering the whole thing.
It's six long months before Samira becomes an attending.

Samira moves closer, until she’s beside him. Closer than he’d expected. Leans her forearms over the railing, fingers hovering over the edge. Jack withholds a shiver at the slight press of her skin against his. He looks down and imagines the silver of the gap between their fingers disappearing. Interlocking instead.
